Safety & Side Effects

The most common side effects with Detrol^® LA (tolterodine tartrate extended release capsules) include:

• Dry mouth
• Headache
• Constipation
• Abdominal pain

Medicines like Detrol LA can cause blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness.

Tips for managing some common side effects

To help manage dry mouth, you could:

• Chew sugar-free gum or suck on sugar-free hard candies
• Consider taking small sips of water throughout the day
• Avoid alcohol and tobacco, as these can dry out the mouth

To help manage constipation, try to:

• Eat more fiber found in foods like apples, spinach, and whole grain breads
• Drink enough fluids to stay well hydrated throughout the day
• Exercise regularly (moderate exercise each day may help)

If you are bothered by side effects such as dry mouth or constipation, talk to your doctor. Many medicines can cause these side effects. Or these may be signs of other problems. Your doctor can help find the cause. He or she may also be able to help you find the best plan to manage side effects.

What to tell your doctor before starting Detrol LA

Before starting Detrol LA, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including:

• Stomach or intestinal problems
• Trouble emptying your bladder or if you have a weak urine stream
• Eye problem called narrow-angle glaucoma
• Liver or kidney problems
• A condition called myasthenia gravis
• If you or any of your family members have a rare heart condition called QT prolongation (long QT syndrome)
• If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. It is not known if Detrol LA could harm your unborn baby
• If you are breast-feeding. It is not known if Detrol LA passes into your milk or if it can harm your child

Before starting Detrol LA, tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Other drugs can affect how your body handles Detrol LA.

Who should not take Detrol LA

Do not take Detrol LA if you:

• Are not able to empty your bladder (urinary retention)
• Have delayed or slow emptying of your stomach (gastric retention)
• Have an eye problem called uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
• Are allergic to Detrol or Detrol LA or to any of its ingredients (for a complete list of ingredients, please read the Patient Information)
